A Nostalgia of Boybands Music

Written By : Riri Oktriani

It doesn’t take long time to remember my favourite music when I was teenager. Boybands. I love them. Its proof with their posters that fill my room’s wall. I’m madly in love with them. It looks with my tabloids collection, all of their edition. I’m a big fan of those good looking boy. Usually, they be composed of five boys in one group. Don’t ask, I completely know all of their song lyrics in one album. Eventhough I don’t get what it means. But, which important to me is I know it and completely can singing their song. Of course, this is a pride.

Yap, I fall in love with Westlife. This boyband come from Irlandia and so enticing me. They become one of my identity when I was teenager. It’s so important to talk about them with all of my classmates. The conversation running with many questions and also a statements, like “Ooh, I ike Mark very much,” with crack smiling its come from my lips. Ouch, it riddicoulus if I remember again that time. But, that’s me when still teenager. That’s the music which I love. But its not the riddicoulus thing, actually. Its just..., funny.

But this time, I don’t wanna talk about Westlife which members just four now (OMG! I Still know about them! Hehehe). Because these days, my memory come to another boyband. They early coming than Westlife. They’re Backstreet Boys. I knew about them—their song—in my last year in Elementary School. In fact, this time, I miss their song.

Alone, writing about this, just no big deal for me. Because Backstreet Boys’ song accompanying me. Their song just playing in my Winamp, and those accross so many albums which their released. Eventhough they completely don’t know me, but their song have meaning for me, even now. All of those thing, their song, just because I miss with memories and nostalgia with my teenager time. I don’t need compromise with that.

If I think back, at that time I already drowning with their love songs. Just like Drowning.

'Cause everytime I breathe, I take you in, and my heart beats again, baby I can't help it, you keep me, drowning in your love...

This love song lyric, just took me drowning. Generally, I think this song tell about broken heart. In fact, beside romantic, are these boy could feel broken heart that so deep like this song? Perhaps. It’s not only broken heart songs. When fall in love, Backstreet Boys’ lyric so touching—eventhough sounds lying. Just try to listen their song, As Long As You Love Me in 90es.

People say I'm crazy and that I am blind..., I don't care who you are, where you're from, what you did, as long as you love me...

But maybe there’s someone feel about this with their lover. So sweet, just like an orange that ripe from the trees. Isn’t artificial. Try little bit closet, this song so relevan with All I Have To Give.

After long enough vaccum in music, they back with an album title “Never Gone” that released in 2005. Yap, with this album they really proof that they never gone from music. Incomplete song which become their hits attract me when the first time see their video clip. They look elegan and have strong character. The pop music still taste in this album. It’s not only in Incomplete but also in Never Gone and I Still.

Printed : 1938

Matrilineal system—a generation system of ethnics that taken from mother side—makes Zainuddin just couldn’t have place on his own village, Batipuh, Padang Panjang. Real, just because his mother a Bugis with father from Minang that abroad. Far from his own village in West Sumatera. Zainuddin just like a foreigner and doesn’t admited as Minang. But it’s doesn’t matter, eventhough he’s didn’t recognize by the people in his own home. During in Batipuh, he’s staying with his aunt.

Not for a long time, Zainuddin fall in love with Hayati, a sweet girl from highly regarded family. And then they had relationship. But, Zainuddin couldn’t take long time for living in his own home. Because the people always ask about what he’s doing in Batipuh. Soon, he realize that he have to do something and decide to looking for fortune and good luck in Padang Panjang town. Before leaving, Hayati had promise to loyal and waiting Zainuddin to go back to Batipuh.

Zainuddin and Hayati still survive with their power of love. Don’t care, eventhough only could hold the love letters. And then, another letter comes from Zainuddin to propose Hayati. But, in conformity with that, Aziz, a brother of Hayati’s friend, also comes with same purpose. Hayati’s family decide to refuse the propose from Zainuddin.

After heard that decision, Zainuddin broken heart. He lost his way. The pain made he couldn’t breath. He couldn’t feel his life. Months, he’s got sick, unpowerfull, just calling Hayati’s name. The doctor couldn’t say anything, Zainuddin need to meet with his lover, Hayati. Bang Muluk, his friends—also son of rent house owner—sent Hayati a letter for coming to Padang Panjang seeing Zainuddin health’s condition.

At that time, Zainuddin crying, so painfull seeing Hayati come with Aziz. Her hands full with inai—just like mahendi in India—and also her sweer finger in right hand had a ring. In the end, he have to realize and facing the truth that Hayati was not belong with him.

Bang Muluk being Zainuddin’s best friend, help him to brush and take away his painfull past. About his identity which doesn’t admited by family on the village and also he could’nt reach his true love. He realize that he have to build his life again. From zero. With Bang Muluk, he abroad to Surabaya. Being author of teather and fiction story. By years, he become a successful man. But, this world is so small. Aziz got move to Surabaya because his job. They meet again with Zainuddin in Sumatera’s society on some teather event.
Unfortunately, Aziz and Hayati’s life was unhappy. Aziz so often spent his time and money to gambling. Hayati is arousing pity. Aziz lose his job and they have no other choice. They stay with Zainuddin. Day by day, with no changes of their life, Hayati was divorced by Aziz. He was end his life with suicide on a hotel in Banyuwangi. Before that, because long time ago he had taking Hayati from Zainuddin’s arms so Aziz give Hayati back to Zainuddin.

But, the pain still have a print. His heart was frozen. He didn’t want to remain his deep love to Hayati. He didn’t care eventhough at that time he was still alone. He refuse Hayati, and suggest her to go back to Batipuh. With empty heart, Hayati leave Surabaya with Van der Wijck ship. The route is form Makassar-Tanjung Perak-Semarang-Tanjung Priok-Palembang, and then Padang. But, the faith had been written down. That ship foundered after few hours form Perak. Hayati and the other passangers had saving to the hospital in Tuban.

Heard that, Zainuddin got shock. He go to the hospital and can meet Hayati before dying. He confess to Hayati that he still love her and Hayati feel it so. But his pain to deep for confessing that he still love her. And he broken heart again. And this time will be forever. For the second time, he lose Hayati. A year later, he also leaving all his memories because sick.

When I read this novel—in Senior High School—and still now, I feel this novel was so amazing. From the story, we can see, that long time ago, a man that wants to know his identity refused by his father’s family because he have no ethnics generation. He is not a Minang. Since boy, Zainuddin grown up in Makassar, South Sulawesi. His mother is Bugis and his father is Minang. So, otomatically, if we see from Minang custom, of course he doesn’t admited by the people of his village as Minang. His propose to a girl from Minang names Hayati, also got refuse because Hayati’s family prefer Aziz which has good future and recognize by the people in the village.

The conflict that always comes make Zainuddin keep on his effort to build his life again. It starts from the family that give him little chance, his unreach love story, try to be successful man which takes long time, until facing again by diffulty to choose: accept Hayati or still with his principe and frozen heart. But, in the end, Zainuddin feel sorry for his dicision. But, I think this is a classic roman that so amazing.

And from the way Hamka show this story—with his language style—this novel easy to understand. Because in some novel of 1930’s or 1940’s era theres many analogy of language or style that difficult to understand by reader in this era. But I think, not for this novel. The language so touch to our heart, Hamka can make the reader get into plot story. Also feeling the sadness of Zainuddin and all of the conflict that happen on this novel.

Finally, I’m trying not too over in judgement, novel had been printed in 23 times, makes me blue with all of the aspects; stroy, language, and a deep love conflict. Really, that’s the truth.

Hi it’s RR again,
This photo was taken at afternoon at Cihampelas Walk, a mall in Bandung, West Java. This picture is a result of practising to photograph something, maybe to create and invent a another kind of photo. Beacuse all I know, there is no boundaries on photography world. And this practice was one of my assignment for subject college at the end of exam.

With this assignment, I had to describe a lifestyle of modern people this time, who spend their time at the shopping center. Mall that I visited, looks different than the other mall in Bandung. Because this mall have a many feature and facility, like the park, trees, and including this fountain miniature, exactly it’s not like “miniature” but it is have a tiny version size.

In this assignment job, I was accompanied by my two friends, they helped me to learn how to take a photo, the technique and something like that, which I still learn untill now. However, I can see that peoples have their way to make thing’s easy and fun for ownself. There is people just fun to stay around home, hang out with friends, family, and even with boy or girlfriend. But, it all comes back to us,from ourself to please with own different way. Beacuse It’s not just about hangout to become the only way for pleasure.

The Godfather : An Epic Movie

The Godfather
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Adapted from Mario Puzo's Novel

The Godfather (1972), is an American Gangster Film, which telling about associate criminal family to conquer a power around the city of new York.
This film was adapted from novel with same name from writer Mario Puzo, “The Godfather”. The cast on this film played by many big actor. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard S Castelano, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton. Most of this cast was honored and get many respect from among the Hollywood actor.
The Godfather is one of The Best movie, which on second place, below Citizen Kane film based on AFI’s 100 years 100 movies (10th Anniversary Edition) by American Film Institute.
The Godfather, take story on 1945 september, where The Big Boss is Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) became The Godfather, who rule all the associate family mob in New York city. With his consigliere Tmo Hagen (Robert Duvall) trying to build a dynasty and negotiate with other associate mob family on territory struggle.
The conflict came when The Godfather was shot by other family mob, and his sons Sonny Corleone (James Caan) and The Youngest Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), where Michael is the only of Don Vito’s son who never involved on crime mob family trying to payback a revenge to family mob that was involved on his father’s shooting.
After the payback revenge has done from Michael, he was hided to Italy, exact on sicilia, a place where his father was born. It all because Michael has kill one of corrupt New York police, captain McCluskey (Sterling Hayden) and Sollozo.
After that, The Third Corleone brother, Fredo Corleone (John Cazale), was sent to Las Vegas, where he protected by casino operator who has been involve on associate Five families.
While the police and other authorities begin to hunt down on mafia activity, Don Vito is particularly distressed when he learns of michael’s involvement, since he had planned for Michael to remain uninvolved in the “family business”
However, the conflict more heat up, when Michael came back from Italy, and continue his father position, after The Godfather’s resign. Don Vito trusted Michael because he is the most lovely son that Don Vito’s ever had, despite of Michael intelligence and smart decision. The treason and power conquer became so epic after Michael was trusted by his father. At the end this film make the audience grip and tense at the edge of the seat for watching it.
I think this is the best film ever. As we can see how the story adapted by Mario puzo’s novel became so great when Francis Ford Coppola as Director, transfer the story into a great movie ever. Coppola make this film the best as he can, too direct and make this movie so tense and thrilling at the end. Mario puzo also involved and working as screenplay in this film.

Despite from the great story adaptation, this film was starring by many great actor. Many actor of this film, became a big actor until now, as we can see Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall still playing many movie right now.
Francis Ford Coppola making a great decision, from casting star. Marlon Brando played The Best as Don Vito Corleone, and Winning Academy Award as Best Actor at that time.
While Michael Corleone’s played by Al Pacino was the best role he ever act. Even many of movie magazine stated that the role (Michael Corleone) is the number one role Al Pacino ever played by. The other cast also bring the effect on this film, creating a good chemistry among other cast involvement.

The greatest thing in this film, is how good Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo working together to create a one of the best movie of all time from novel and resurrect on film media and played by many great actor Hollywoos ever had.

peace

Sunset Rider

Text and Photo By : Risky C.H. Ondang

Hi,,
It’s me again, if you guys ain’t boring to read my line.

This photo was taken at the end of sunset, where sun comes down and change to night time (maybe it doesn’t need to describe it, cause people ain’t stupid). I realize how big this world is, just to see the city down at it. actually me and my other friends ride on the hill at bandung, which i don’t know what the name of place called. Because from that hill, we can see almost the whole city at bandung on evening night. The city lights, so beautiful, in this creative city (i don’t know why it called like that, maybe because the people in this city SO CREATIVE). But honestly, the first time i came to this city, when my first grade on mid school, it amaze me how beautiful this city with the people in it, so creative, inventing something new and different than other. As we can see how good and humble people on west java, especially at sunda clan, the culture, gesture and how they interact with people, (and also the beauty girls in it, so tempted :D)

Back to the time when me and my friends take a photo at the hill, wonder me that this is a bautiful city where people can make dreams come true, of course with hard work and intelligence.
(who knows ?) God work in mysterious way.

Peace y’all

Maybe my story ain’t have connection or relativity from this photo, but all i know this it. just like that and always like that.

Two Sides On Rectoverso

Pages : 154 + xviii

Just open page 14. There’s a mother lying on the grass with her son. Staring the stars in silence. She doesn’t need to talk to know what her son thinking and feeling about. Because, she’s already know about her son. This is a short story that will make you feel a deeper mother’s love to her son.

Facing autisism son isn’t easy thing. With all of routine that have to face day by day, so the changes—just a little—become fatal. “Change the routine is same thing like persuade the earth to stop around the sun,” Dee wrote. That boy, will always cutting the lawn, boiling the water, washing the clothes, and counting his one hundred soap collection. This is not just a routine. But becomes a ritual.

A mother’s love stronger and never faded. Never tired facing her son. More over, when her son fall in love with his younger brother’s girlfriend. She knew that her son impossible to get that love, or the woman also impossible to accept that love because she has already decide to choose his brother. But their mother believe, that her love is really true, and ready to test. This story covered in a title “Malaikat Juga Tahu”.

Or just read “Firasat”. In this story, you will invite to understand that in live we have to learn to accept what has been written down for us. It doesn’t mean we just surrender. But, with that, we learn to understand and accept ourself . “When we learn to accept, we also learn to peace. With intuition we learn to accept ourself, and peace with our live,” says a guy in this story.

And find the another uniques kind of the characters and plot story which arranged by Dee in “Hanya Isyarat”. In this story, a mysterious guy—no name—unpurpose get into a group that telling their most sad story. Within, there’s a two guy and a woman. “...who becomes the winner will get...this,” A whole beer drag into center of the table. Dee wrote.

And guess what, when the mysterious guy tell his story, he is the winner. With a simple story, but touching, really, unpredictable. That guy doesn’t need a beer. He’s only ask the woman to turn on back the disco light on the center of the cafe, so he can sit just like the first time. Just like when he keep his eye on that woman from a distance. Guessing the colors of her eyes ball. That’s enough to make him back to his pleasure. No need to talk, enough to being background.

However, this is unpredictable story. Their just interact with gestures and symbols. They don’t know each other, but they sharing something. And maybe they also got something that night.

Three of the eleven story in this book covered in “Rectoverso”. This book isn’t a novel, but, inside there’s many simple short story. And what make this book so different is analyzing of the story that expressed in interest and wonderful words. How the author, Dee, can make the analogy with good sentences. Also, Dee can appearing simplicity which hiding in each story that she create.

In this book, how Dee describe about the metaphore of each story is best thing. So, the plot story keep their own uniques with a strong characters. I call this “Rectoverso” just like in two sides, cause the real thing, the other side of this book there’s in an album with same title: Rectoverso. Showing 11 songs with same title on the 11 story in the book. But, you don’t have to worry. Only reading the story you can also get the meaning of those story. Just, complete the enjoyment when you reading the story with listening the music.

Happy reading!

Life Style, A Describe From “Ciwalk”

Text & Photo By: Riri Oktriani

Life is spinning, and life style won’t left away. Many habit that almost people do, have been their own life style. Start to consuming goods or some products, to the many activities that cover the society’s life which living in city.

The yard floor on Cihampelas Walk (Ciwalk) Mall in Bandung still wet. The trees that decorated around the mall’s street also still leave behind a drop of water that hanging on the leafes. The cleaning services busy enough to mop the first floor of mall’s enter door. And when I look around, this mall just quiet for a visitors.

That noon (22/01), rain falling almost Bandung city. When I went from my house in Gagak Street, drizzle appears with the cold wind blows. The weather of Bandung city often change extremely now. From morning, the sun feel so brightly shining. But when noon come, the sky suddenly cloudy. The sun which so bright, suddenly cover with black cloud.

Maybe this is cause Ciwalk not too much people to visit. I was went there with a two friends, and that day isn’t weekend. When entered Ciwalk, some people seen talking in little tends in around of J.CO Donuts & Coffee. And I start to take a picture.

Eventhough the air was cold enough, they seen comfort to talk. Maybe, that comfortable created because the warm form a cup of Coffee Latte or Cappucino which they drink. This is a part of society’s life style in modern time. Generally, in big city like Bandung, just talking or hang out in high class coffee shop like J.CO or Starbucks become some habit. Hang out being so important to “release” all of tired time after whole week activities.

Of course, every person have different way to calm their tired time. One of them, with visit mall with friends, partner and colleagues, or family. Ciwalk, can describe, how many people looking for entertaint or hang out place with visiting mall. No exception for two girls of Senior High School student that I catch their picture at that time. They still wearing white-grey uniform when walking behind the stores and restaurants in Ciwalk.

From the performance, Ciwalk designed with different style than other mall. It’s not only high building, but Ciwalk also giving different atmosphere with “green” decoration. Flowers and trees decorated around this mall. Not only that, structural of restaurant and stores also design attractively.

Out of the Ciwalk high building, line up the restaurants and stores which decorate just like café beside the street in foreign country. And between two side of line that stores, there’s little stands which selling so many things. Start from accessories until fancy plants. This perfect design added with Palm tree in the middle of the two side of stores. And a lot of flowers on pot hanging in the pillar of the building. Also, bench park arrange spread out in whole yard of Ciwalk.

Come close to night, me and my friends just fillin’ our stomach in one of the restaurant which cheap enough and also delicious in Ciwalk. In second floor, I had a chance to take a picture again. From there, I take the atmosphere of Ciwalk that still the same as when I arrive in noon.

And tonight is gonna be late. The air feel colder. But I’m not alone, because the jokes and talks with both of my friends can warming tonight. Not just like them who drink some delicious Coffee Latte or Cappucino.

His job is to firing people for a coward boss to afraid firing his own employees in company. So, he flew around the united states of america to firing people as his duty, travel many company to make his job done.

But, his pleasure to flew around, didn’t last long. Because a young ambitious women, who “rookie” in his company, Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) make a lay-off program that look like efficient to firing people by using advanced technology media by via livecam. This program make Ryan’s Bingham company in Omaha, Nebraska, can minimalize the outcome of the company.

Of course Ryan doesn’t agree. They make a complicated argue, involving their boss, Craig Gregory (Jason Bateman). On Craig’s decision, Natalie must become partner with Ryan Bingham to travel together and fire people, so Natalie can learn from Ryan Bingham about thing that she doesn’t know. So Natalie travel in the air with Ryan. Both of them, learn a lot of experience from their own perspective of life. Natalie has a great life with her boyfriend, feeling love, and also heart broken. It is differently with Ryan’s life who look so simply and live alone on his apartment. He also doens’t like make a commitment with other women he meet, and keeping distance with his own family.

On his way travelling, Ryan met a women name’s Alex (Vera Farmiga), a success women career who has same thought and life, seems not differently with Ryan. Quickly, they have a same view and thought untill they like each other and have a intimate relationship. But clearly they don’t even need a commitment for what they do.

In the end, he must admit that he also need someone else to fill his life. He crush on Alex. Unfortunately, Alex had a family.

During travel around with Natalie, Ryan had a thought to get back on the track. He also sent a recommendation letter to company, where Natalie trying to get a new job. So, life goes on, Ryan keep in the air, living his lonely life as usual. Nothing change, but both (Natalie and Ryan) perspective life, and meaningful.

In making decision, we think, we have to trust and believe what we decide and never hesitate. Even for all the risk and obstacles. After that, we can learn from decision we make. Also include with Ryan, dare to decide how he gonna track his life. Release his epic and dread of commitment.

On this film, we can see how charming George Clooney as Ryan Bingham. So with Anna Kendrick with her brilliant act on her role as Natalie Kendrick, a straightforward girl on this film. No wonder why she got a nomination for supporting cast with her talented act. The Director, Jason Reitman (who also director on “Juno” and “Thank You For Smoking”), got juice on this film, with his characteristic about direct and angle of this film. Simple, unusual but attractive to watch.

He also appraise on George Clooney, “If you’re going to make a movie about a guy who fires people for a living and you still want to like him that actor better be damn charming and I don’t think there’s a more charming actor a life than George Clooney. I was very lucky, he said yes.”

Never Dream to Become a Duchess

Director : Saul Dibb
Producers : Michael Kuhn, Gabriel Tana

The Duchess. Where’s Georgiana Spencer (Keira Knightly), a noble’s wife, heir a kingdom of London—The Duke, sacrifice her whole life become a prisoner in her own home. The Duke of Devonshire, William (Raplh Fiennes), marrying Georgiana just for one purpose: in order get a son to continue his kingdom. But badly, Georgiana give him a daughter. William himself thought that this is a Georgiana’s failed as a wife because can’t give him a son.

Her husband have a relationship with Lady Elizabeth (Laura Stevely)—who was also a friend of Georgiana. Many years, Georgiana living in deep painfull. And in complicated condition she’s in love with a young politicus, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper). As a wife of a Duke, Georgiana can’t do much, except, do William’s rules. She can’t ask her husband to leave Lady Elizabeth. Of course, because she have no power for that. She have to pretend as “Duchess”—a calling for The Duke’s wife—who support her husband and follow all of his rules. Mean a while, her relationship with Charles Grey is deeper than she realize.

William’s selfish as a controler of Georgiana’s life seeing when Georgiana had a baby boy—as he wish. He just don’t care about Georgiana’s feeling, eventhough he knew that Georgiana cheating with Charles Grey. He just thinking about getting a son. And Georgiana herself have no power to leaving her husband and live together with Charles because she have to hold on for her daugthers.

Lady Elizabeth know that Georgiana loves Charles. Than she help Georgiana to meet Charles quietly. No longer, William knew about that. Then he “punish” Georgiana. If she doesn’t come back to the kingdom, he will make every door closed for Charles. It means, no chance for Charles become Prime Minister. And Georgiana have no choice (again) except, follow the rules.

Until Georgiana pregnant—a baby from Charles—William send her to a village far from kingdom. He command Georgiana to take a birth there. And after that, the baby girl, will grown up by Charles’ family. It’s painfull.

After back to kingdom, her life just become as usual. Pretend that she’s okay, and nothing happen. Because the people in kingdom just knew that she went for travel for a years. But, that’s not real life. In the end, Georgiana give her blessed to Lady Elizabeth and her husband to get marry. She’s still living in palace with her daughters and Elizabeth’s sons. But, Lady Elizabeth keep helping Georgiana to see her daughters—in Charles’ family—queitly. Until her death, her life just like that. Become a prisoner in her own home.

This film setting in 18th century in London. At that time, I can see that women only use to get a son for the throne kingdom. And if they can do that, it means they fail to do their duty as a wife. But, now we know that man, actually make certain about that the baby is girl or boy. At that time, It’s just unfair for women. Because women supposed to appreciated for their loyality, efort, and persistence to the family.

And this film, can make men realize that they have to appreciated and no underestimate for women. Cause, glory of a men determined by a women—their wife. So, for you men, you need to think twice about it.

The Traitor

Review

Samir Horn (Don Cheadle) is an Arabic-speaking Sudanese-American and devout Muslim. His Sudanese Arab father was killed by a car bomb when he was a child. As an adult, Horn is first seen operating as an arms dealer. While negotiating a deal with Omar (Saïd Taghmaoui) in Yemen he is arrested and thrown into a Yemeni jail. Samir and Omar become friends in jail and when Omar's people arrange an escape, he takes Samir with them.

Joining the Islamic Brotherhood, Samir uses the skills he learned as an 18C engineer staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Special Forces to bomb the U.S. consulate in Nice, France. The group then devises a plot to place suicide bombers on 50 buses in the U.S. during Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, in London, the Islamic Brotherhood finds out Fareed is being targeted by the FBI and he escapes by a source in the FBI headquarters. It is revealed that Samir is working under deep cover for an intelligence contractor, Carter (Daniels), with the United States government against terrorism. The FBI agents pursuing him don't know this, and Carter is killed by Omar.

Meanwhile, FBI Special Agent Roy Clayton (Pearce) pursues Samir through numerous countries, resulting in their final confrontation in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. While on board a cargo ship to Marseilles, France, Samir learns the identity of Nathir and kills Nathir, Fareed, and when Omar is about to kill him, he tells that he switched the bombers' emails and he placed them all on the same bus and all of them die. Canadian police, with the FBI, breaks in and kills Omar and injures Samir.

Later, under a Chicago El bridge, Samir tells Agent Clayton he feels guilty for killing the innocent people in the consulate. Samir tells Clayton that the Qu'ran says that to kill an innocent person is to kill all mankind. Clayton responds by noting that the Qu'ran also says that by saving an innocent person, you have saved all mankind, and tells Samir he is a hero. The movie ends with Samir praying at a mosque.

Perfume: The Story of A Murderer

Written By : Risky C.H. Ondang

A guy with name Jean-Baptise Grenouille (played by Ben Whisaw) born in a market fish. He is a orphan and born without scent of body. But, he has a sort of characteristic that nobody have, an extraordinary sharp smelling. He can separate and know about all every smell, from sharp smell, rocks, metal, and a scent from human body very perfecto.

In the beginning of story, this film begin with the voice of narrator (by John Hurt) with 15-20 minutes duration in this film. Setting in 18th century, a dirty town in france to describe about Jean’s Life.

Since he started to smell the scent of a fruitseller girl that he met in a crowd on market, he became obsessed to save a essence of human scent. So he started to learn and cook a parfume recipe from kind of oil and spices.

His intelligence in cook and collect parfumes bring him to the evil ambition; create the best parfume with virgin scent to kill girls. A serial killing about 25 virgin girls happens with so fast and without trace. They died so sadistic. The cloth, hair and scalp of the victim gone.
A body became so pale just like never live before.

Then it last a girl that became the last target from Jean, that she meant to be a ingredient to cook for his (Jean) perfume. At the end of the story, Jean used The perfect parfume and gives and unexpected effect. The parfume make a whole town addict to a sex party and became cannibal.

This story adopted from Best Seller novel by Patrick Sϋskind. A full comprehension from Ben Wishaw for Jean cast look so excellence. He success to perform an image of Dark character of Jean who cruel, cold, innocent, heartless and love. In a killing process, he look doesn’t have a guilty feeling for what he done. The most important thing for him is to get a perfect ingredient and spices to make a essence perfume of virgin scent.

The shooting proccess has success to imagin a dirty town/place in 18th century of France. There’s no blood and gore feature in this film, even this story telling about serial killing.
it all finish with the cold killing style.

Perhaps, the message that I can tell from this film is to remember us don’t too obsesed of things. Because it can be worst, not only for ourself but also for the people around us. The intelligence that we have can be usefull to ourself and people around us, so that we can do a changes to a positive way. So, don’t be greedy as a pig!

If the first book beginning with a question “Had you go to Bali?” And this time Benny & Mice begin it with (also) a question “What makes Bali so special?” The classic answers show up; met with poor “bule” (a calling for tourist from the foreign country), being couple, yap, it can be so romantic. And the others say that Bali was a place for fun; you can surfing and also heaven for shopping. But of course, that things not must do in Bali. So, whatever the answers, Bali giving different impressions and memories for the tourist. Also with Benny & Mice’s adventures at this second time.

They show that impressions with trying to catch the other side of Bali. In the beginning of stroy they show some discrimination of serving between domestic tourist and foreign tourist. But, still with jokes a la Benny & Mice. And unexpected, they really LOST in Bali! They was traped in a cafe at Seminyak, with whole of gay. And this continued until they arrive in hotel. Benny refuse to sleep one bed with Mice.

Their adventure schedule still continue. This time, they’re seeing the turtles farm in the Turtle Island from Tanjung Benoa. They unrecomended this place to visit, but, if you interested, why not? And then, you should pay for IDR 400.000,- to enjoy (only) 15 minutes walking under the sea. It’s expensive, isn’t it? But, If I couldn’t try it, it doesn’t matter for me, because I know that by seeing their action when Sea Walker. Little bit crazy. And you will laughing and loud of laughing wathcing their ridiculous thing on Camel Safari in Nusa Dua Beach. They dressing just like Arabian when riding the camel! “Ahlan wa Sahlan” they shouting.

After that, Ubud become their next destination. Enjoy coldness Ubud’s nature with field view and watching the class music in Jazz Cafe Ubud. They dressing (again) like jazz musician. And the journey end in “Goa Gajah”.

Unsatisfy with all of their goods on ransel, they bought impossible goods: a gazebo! But, for them, what’s impossible? Cause of that, it can be possible for me or you (who have not go to Bali yet) to go there someday. So, why don’t you enjoy the tour with both funny guy?

After succed with “Lagak Jakarta 1 & 2 Serial”, “Jakarta Luar Dalem”, and “Jakarta Atas Bawah”, Benny & Mice again and again showing their funniest of their cartoons. And this time, Bali Island becomes their pointer. Since their show up, this duo artist, graduated form Jakarta Arts Institute, had been showed their own way to express the messages in each of the comics. In the other comics, they so detail to see the condition of Sosiocultural Jakarta’s society in their routine. The result? Don’t have to doubt about it, they successfull to make me, personally, isn’t only have loud of laugh, but also it comes reflection to my self.

Seeing the title of this comic, you don’t have to rush to make suspection. They are not really LOST in Bali. But what happen is they can make the readers lost! So be carefull (just kidding ). But relax, there’s always a way to come back. Cause this comic just like “tour guide” to me (I haven’t go to Bali, but one day, who knows?). Its just like little map if you want to go to Bali with good description in it. They giving different description about Bali. It’s not only beautiful and wonderful island, but also unique with many characters of Bali’s people and tourist, from domestic and foreign country.

When reading this comic, “watch” their adventure when arrive in Kuta Beach. “Seeing” the unspected things; tourist’s and saller’s behaviour and also many class of tourist they tell here. After that, you will go to the Pura Ulun Danu in Bedugul which cold with mountain weather. Unfinish yet, because you will see Alas Kedaton. And you don’t have to worry, you will accompany to the Sukowati market to shopping stuff there. Of course, cover with shopping tips in order you get the best price.

The GWK (Garuda Wisnu Kencana) will make you stop for a while, because it has giant size! And you also see Uluwatu; a Holly Pura. And then, Jimbaran just a cozy and right place to make you taste fresh seafood. But unfortunately, not for both funny guy. Cause, the prices unfriendly with their wallet. You don’t have to upset, because all of this comic story cover with their funny stuff in showing you Bali Island with all of the details.

In the end of the comic, their adventure just like unclear. I personal don’t know that it will be a second book, eventhough in the end of page there’s notice “to be continiued”. But, this comic giving another alternatif of entertainment to enjoy a comic which so Indonesia. It starts form the picture, character, and jokes a la Benny & Mice. Finally, just ready to laugh!

Title : Saman
Author : Ayu Utami
Publisher : KPG (Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia)
Printed : 27 times (June, 2008)
Pages : 202 + ix

This novel wrote with no boundary by Ayu Utami. Setting in 1990, this novel telling about complications of women’s life who have strong character and different background. And also about the village lifes that unstabil and struggle because the community land would taken by a company. At that time, Saman appears—in the beginning his name was Athanasius Wissanggeni. He help village people to defend for their land. And for all of that, he’s leaving his status as pastur in the church at his hometown, Perabumulih.

Living in the village and become ‘soldier’ with the village people become the way of life that he choose. Eventhough that thing takes him to the risk dead or life. And the consequences is Saman just like a provokacator of village people. Saman himself still stand up for his faith and the people to defent their land.

The situation just can’t hold anymore, and conflict break out. Finally, Saman get caught. He’s lock on and tortured in a room, far from village. Escaping begins. Its bring him to his friends, four of women which he was known when he still a pastur. They are Yasmin, Laila, Cok, and Shakuntala. Then, Saman become wanted. When the disturbance in Medan occur, again, Saman was accused as ‘the power behind the scenes’. There’s no way. Saman have to escape to the other country. With helping of Cok who has her own hotel, and Yasmin, escaping to America were planed.

Ayu Utami creating the characters in this novel is just so interesting and complicated. Cover with no boundary of the story. Added with their own conflict which connecting each others. From Laila, a woman who fall in love to wrong man. First, she adore Wissanggeni or Saman, and finally she fall in love to him. But now, she fall in to Sihar, married man. And Yasmin, a lawyer who got married, when escaping of Saman, finally giving her heart to him. The two others, Cok, brave woman and has so many connections and also Shakuntala, struggle and always want to be a dancer.

But often, I personal think that this novel contain sentences that have to read over, and over again. Because, many conversation between characters has no sign. So, it’s little bit confusing, I think. Beside that, the sentences have to clearly understand by the reader because so many unusual grammar. But after all this story is unique. The conflict isn’t just happen between Saman and the company, but also personal conflict of the character which unspected.

Men of Honor : He Just Break The Rules

Written By : Riri Oktriani

Film Identity
Title : Men of Honor
Year : 2000
Cast : Robert De Niro, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Hal Holbrook,
Charlize Theron, Aunjanue Ellis.
Director : George Tillman
Producer : Robert Teitel
Screenwriter : Scott Smith

“Promise me?”
“Sir?”
“Don’t end up like me.”
This promise take him to the top career in the USA Navy.

The persistence’s of a Negro, name’s Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) makes him doesn’t miss his hope to be a Master Chief—a top position for USA Navy. Eventhough his father only a farmer who doesn’t have own field to work on, even he doesn’t care that he is Negro. “Colors, Nigger”. That’s the way of “white people” call him.

“Bust their old rules, if you have to do it,” said his father before he leaving, start to fight being a member of USA Navy. And he did it. Long enough stay at kithcen in the ship, make him uncomfortable with that situation. And like his father said: he just break the rules. Guess what, he breaks the rule about separation between black and white.

It’s start when he say, “I’m hot in Friday,”. He just don’t care with what his friend said: “We’ve only may swim on Tuesday.” And clearly, the white people shouting: “You have the wrong day, man!” But, this is Carl. He will break the rules. He just go down to the deck and swimming.

And then, a Navy ask him to go back for Cheif Ship’s command. But again, he doesn’t care. He swimming to a tower that far enough from ship. Just like competition, white people try to chase him. But who knows, Carl has good skill when swimming, reach the tower so fast. The Chief Ship’s just interested. And from behind the kitchen, his position up. He just being Petty Officer Second Class, and his duty is swimming and saving. Only that.

At the some time, tragedy in the ship makes Leslie William Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro), a Master Chief had to go down level being coach in the USA Navy Divers School. Without no doubt, Carl said to the Chief Ship’s that he wants to be a Master Chief. He want the Chief Ship’s giving him recomendation to go to the next position in Navy. “That’s hard to reach, man! Even, for the colors.”

But he never give up. Because two years later Carl succeed to follow a task in the Diving School, Bayonne, New Jersey. Unfortunately, because he’s a black, he had to stand, waiting in the morning until afternoon to get in the barracks. In a fact, actually he can get in easily because he had license letter. But, he can’t just because he’s a Negro.

Insults from white people just like “welcome greating” to him when he can get in to barracks. This situation worst than you can imagine. There’s no one white people want to be his roommates, execpt Snowhill. “I don’t want to stay here with Negro.” That’s what they said.

The differences clearly seen from the way of white people’s attitude, especially when exercise. At that time, Carl succeed saving Isert’s life—one of white people—when diving exercise. But, tomorrow morning, suddenly Rourke, who left Isert when he dying under the sea, get the award in a ceremony. But Carl, even Isert, can not do anything to proof what actually happen.

Carl’s diving performance was good than ever. Added with good result test makes him surely graduate to be a Navy Divers. But, Mr. Puppy—the Head of the Diving School—cast by Hal Holbrook, doesn’t want it happen. He says to Mr. Sunday, “Oil can soiled the water. It won’t happen, because of that, the oil can’t be one with the water.”

Just one last test can makes Carl being Navy Divers. But unfortunately, just because he’s black, he’s got cheated when the test start. His bag which full with tools to assemble a pipe under the sea, got torned by Mr. Sunday in command of Mr. Puppy. And then, Carl had to collect the screws and screwdriver to assemble the pipe. Eventhough the cold water around him, he just don’t give up. He’s still with his faith to proof that he can do it.

Eight hours and 31 menit. Perfect assembling! Mr. Sunday finally shouting.

The perfect assembling for the pipe can be done in eight hours and 31 menit under the sea. Have to admit, finally he became a Navy Divers. In 1968, he being a first African-America who became a Navy Divers with one legs (his left legs had to amputation because an accident in the ship). And in 1970 he’s got fulfill his promise to be a Master Diver. Until 1979 he retired as Navy Divers.

Actually, this film is long enough to review from its release time. But, I try to review this movie because their so many moral values that we can take from this film. How to be brave if we don’t have any mistakes and how to fight for our rights. And also we have to understand that all of human in this world are same. No racism.

This film setting in 1948 and inspired by true story of Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear. The director success to describe about the situation in USA at that time. Eventhough or maybe we can guess the end of the story, but it’s not about result or the end. But it’s about how its going, about process. How, Carl Brashear fight for his rights. Try to proof that skin color’s doesn’t mean anything. This film also make we realize that isn’t easy to make dream come true, but trust me—and this film—you can make it true when you brave and fight for it.
